Is there a war for talent in cannabis?
I’ve been hearing from clients about a talent shortage for some time. I am not sure the data bears it out but clearly many companies have an issue finding and keeping the right people. What I come to understand when I drill down, however, is something quite different:
“We can’t find someone very good in our timing at our desired compensation level”
This is not a war but rather a self-inflicted wound. The root causes of this problem traces to poor role definition, recruiting practices and internal processes.
To correct, management should-
1. Look inside the firm. Often the desired talent is right under your noses (and already a cultural fit). These people just need to be given a chance and nurtured through proper training & mentorship;
2. Raise organizational professionalism. Potential hires will gage the appeal of a company by its approach to recruiting. If you don’t have a professional approach, an organized & expedited recruiting process and even an org chart or a proper offer letter, you will not appeal to cautious or savvy candidates;
3. Better link the job description to actual role needs. Poorly crafted job descriptions plus the lack of prioritization on critical aptitudes & requirements will perpetuate talent mismatches and low employee engagement.
