ChatGPT: coming soon to a cannabis business near you
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” – Arthur C. Clarke, Author
I rarely buy into the hype of the new thing, particularly when it’s a pre-commercial tech launch. But the unveiling of ChatGPT is different. This AI-based tool could be a game changer for large cannabis firms.
ChatGPT is a free and impressive public chatbot that answers questions, pens stories and writes software. It was introduced in November 2022 by OpenAI a private American tech company. A few days after it launched, millions of people (including me) were test driving the technology. ChatGPT lets you type questions using natural language; the chatbot responds with conversational, authoritative and often creative answers.
The bot’s power lies in its AI engine. The tool remembers your questions and dialogue, synthesizes new data, and machine learns as it goes, rapidly improving content quality. The accuracy and style of its answers progresses dramatically when there is copious amount of quality data to learn from.
To be clear, this technology is far from perfect. It can generate incorrect, wooden and misleading answers especially where there is not a lot of data to mine. ChatGPT is not ready to replace all humans – yet.
Where could ChatGPT enhance cannabis operations?
Education & training
Cannabis science’s dynamic nature necessitates educational materials to be updated quickly across all platforms. Employing ChatGPT will enable companies to be on the cutting edge of scientific, medical and product advances in real time and with a lower production cost. However, firms would still need to enlist subject matter experts to check for accuracy, particularly when it comes to nuanced or complex scientific content.
Sales & Marketing
Brand-driven firms rely heavily on topical, expensive to produce content to engage consumers & channel partners and drive sales. Soon, ChatGPT will be able to quickly and inexpensively help you develop and test white papers, sell sheets, presentations and SEO-ranked web content, for different audiences, markets and communication vehicles. A brand manager cum editor will still be needed to safeguard quality, evaluate direct responses and to ensure messages are communicated in the brand voice.
Standard Operating Procedures
Developing SOPs can be a rote albeit time consuming and complex process, ideally suited for an emerging tool like ChatGPT. Of course, firms would still need to apply an expert operational and regulatory lens to ensure that new SOPs are accurate, effective and compliant.
The technology is still immature but is improving rapidly, and other AI-powered tools will soon follow. Check it while its free and accessible to the public.
